Express Entry Round of Invitations
Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) uses a points-based system known as the CRS score calculator to rank potential candidates in the Express Entry pool. During an Express Entry invitation round, the IRCC:
- Selects the type of draw
- Determines the number of candidates to invite
- Identifies the highest-ranking candidates
- Invites those candidates to apply for permanent residency in Canada.
Types of Rounds of Invitations
IRCC conducts various types of rounds of invitations throughout the year:
General Rounds of Invitations
In general rounds, the IRCC invites the highest-ranking candidates from the pool who qualify for programs managed through Express Entry, including the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program, Canadian Experience Class, and Provincial Nominee Program.
Program-Specific Rounds of Invitations
During program-specific rounds, the IRCC invites the highest-ranking candidates who are eligible for a particular Express Entry program linked to a Provincial Nominee Program.
Category-Based Rounds of Invitations
For category-based Express Entry draws, Canada’s Immigration Minister, Sean Fraser, establishes specific categories to achieve targeted economic goals. The IRCC then invites the highest-ranking candidates in the pool who qualify for these designated categories.
New Category-Based Draws for Express Entry
On May 31, Sean Fraser announced that the IRCC has finalized new categories for candidate selection in Express Entry draws. These categories were developed after analyzing labor market forecasts and consulting with various stakeholders, including provincial and territorial governments. The selected categories include:
- French-language proficiency
- Healthcare occupations
- Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) occupations
- Trade occupations
- Transport occupations
- Agriculture and Agri-Food occupations
Category-based selection draws have been anticipated since June 2022, following amendments to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. These changes permit the selection of immigrants based on specific attributes that align with Canada’s economic priorities, such as relevant work experience to address labor market needs or proficiency in the French language.
