Canada is implementing various programs and measures to attract more tech workers to the country, including H-1B holders and digital nomads. The new Tech Talent Strategy aims to facilitate the entry of tech professionals through several initiatives:
1. New Open Work permit for H-1B holders:
Foreign workers with H-1B visas in the US can now apply for a Canadian work permit. Additionally, their accompanying family members have the option to apply for study or work permits. This program will be open for one year, starting from July 16, or until 10,000 applications are received, whichever comes first.
2. New Innovation Stream under the International Mobility Program:
Canada is introducing employer-specific work permits valid for up to five years for workers joining government-approved companies. Highly skilled workers in specific in-demand occupations will be eligible for open work permits also valid for up to five years. The innovation stream is set to launch by the end of this year.
3. Return to 14-day service standard for work permits under the Global Skills Strategy:
To expedite the process of acquiring highly skilled talent from around the world, Employment and Social Development Canada is meeting a two-week processing standard for Global Talent Stream labour market impact assessments. The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is also meeting a two-week standard for work permit applications, following the backlog caused by the pandemic.
4. Opening to digital nomads:
Canada is welcoming remote workers by allowing them to work in the country for up to six months. They will need to follow the same process as visitors to obtain the necessary permissions.
5. Express Entry STEM-specific draws:
Canada will conduct category-based selections to issue additional invitations to apply through the Express Entry system. The first round of these draws is scheduled for the week of July .
6.Improvements to the Start-up Visa Program:
Enhancements to this program include an increased number of spots available for 2023, with further increases planned for 2024 and 2025. Applicants can now apply for a work permit valid for up to three years instead of one year. They will also have the option to apply for an open work permit that allows them to work for any employer, not just their start-up. The three-year open work permit is available to every member of the entrepreneurial team, rather than only essential individuals. Moreover, applications supported by venture capital, angel investor groups, and business incubators with committed capital will receive priority, along with those supported by members of Canada’s Tech Network.Sixxer Migrate offers comprehensive business/ start-up visa services, catering to entrepreneurs and businesses looking to expand globally.
